Maslyana at you Apartment in Lviv

It is officially Shrove Tuesday and all over the world Christian communities begin their period of fasting or lent prior to the  Easter celebrations-Lviv is no exception! In Latin countries this Tuesday is called “Mardi Gras” .  In Lviv and the Slavic world it is called Maslyana.

Lviv is so deeply steeped in history and is known for its’ fervent commitment to religion.  People come from all over the country and the world to witness the amazing religious ceremonies and rituals that continue to be performed here as they have been for generations.

Many rituals are rooted in Pagan tradition, as is pancake Tuesday. Christian Leopolites are allowed to eat as much butter or “Salo” (lard)  with their pancakes on this day as a last indulgence prior to the great feasting of Lent. Expect delicious buckwheat pancakes in the culinary center that is Lviv.

Since ancient times, pancakes have been a symbol of the sun and rich harvest which is very appropriate as Spring is just around the corner.

We at Lviv apartments always await these celebrations with great anticipation.

Georgian Concerts in Lviv (apartments in Lviv)

The Opetra House repertoireMarch promises to be a busy month for The Opera House in Lviv. At the top of  its’ repertoire are two gala performances by Georgian artists.

March 3rd presents Sukhishvile, the famous Georgian National Ballet.  Lviv is a important stop on its’ tour of 30 Ukrainian cities. The troupe has included the traditional Ukrainian dance-”gopok” for their Lviv performance.

March 11th features Georgian Jazz singer Nina Katamadze showcasing  her new album called “Red”.

Georgia and Lviv have always had close relations as they share a common Soviet Past and common aspirations towards democracy.

In 2009 Georgia opened an honorary Consulate in Lviv.

Lviv apartments share the enthusiasm for these Georgian performances.  Don’t forget we are just steps away from the Opera House.

Internation women’s day ( Lviv apartments)

March 8th commemorates  International womens’ day (a Soviet introduced holiday in Ukraine and so more popular in the Eastern part of the country). March 8th falls on a Tuesday and so the Ukrainian government has just declared 4 official days off for the country from Saturday March 5th till Wednesday March 9th.  Cause for celebration!

On this day Lviv also celebrates Lviv Chocolate Day.  On this occasion, 10 of the city’s best pastry chefs will create (with roughly 40 kilos of chocolate) l the “Longest Chocolate Cake” for everyone one to enjoy in the Rynok Square.

As is tradition on this International Womens’ day, men will present flowers to women.  The snowdrop should be just about popping out from under the smow at this time for it is the traditional flower offered to women on this day.

Recently, at the Davos Economic Summit President Yanukovych made a ” faux pas” concerning women. He made a reference to women in Ukraine wearing lighter clothes for spring and this was interpreted by the media as a spring strip tease .

Lviv apartments wishes all of the beautiful women in Lviv a very happy day.

Lviv apartments promote Ukrainian language and culture

Thyer Flag of Ukraine

February 21st marks an important day for Ukraine- it is International day of native languages.   For Lviv this should be a day of pride!  For centuries the Ukrainain language has been persecuted, humiliated and even forced out of use.  Under a program called ” United Russian Language” the Soviets tried to crush the Ukrainian language, culture and art  in their attempts to colonize Ukraine.

The people of Lviv are survivors.  They are very patriotic and nationalistic and would never let their language die!  To this day they protest the Yanukovych regime which wants Russian as an official second language and as a University entrance and testing language.

A 2002 cencus showed that 67.5 o0f Ukrainian citizens claimed Ukraine as their native language-bravo!

The majority of our clients at  Lviv apartments are visitors who are thrilled that we support the Ukrainian language and culture. They are visiting Ukraine to witness it’s unique culture and not a cultured imposed upon it by Russia.

Lviv has always had a very strategic geographic location, bordering many major centers with easy access to Asia.  Among many items, Lviv has traded sugar and so has traditionally had a strong  chocolate culture.  “Svitoch” has been it’s world famous chocolate for generations.  To this day, Lviv is considered second to Bern for it’s chocolate fame.  Downtown Lviv has it’s very own Chocolate factory come restaurant at # 3 Serbska Street.  Here you will find miniature chocolate replicas of City Hall and Lviv’s mascot -the lion.

Remember the 1960′s-pre Lviv apartments of course

THe Foyer of the Liv OperaThe 1960′s are famous for revolutionary changes and movements especially in musical history.  I am sure that Leopolites remember the how the “British invasion” in Pop Music was shrouded in secrecy- hidden from KGB officers!  I certainly remember sneaking into Lviv some Levi Jeans in exchange for caviar during the 1960′s.

Opera also witnessed revolutionary musical events during this period. Certainly, we all remember the amazing voice of Robertino Loretti, the Italian child prodigy that took the Opera world by storm in the 60′s.

Through the years, Loretti has continued to have a brilliant career. Soviet Russia was always one of  his biggest fans.  Rumor has it that  Soviet cosmonaut-Valentina Теreskova even played  his music in space.

Lviv welcomes Loretti on February 11th for a special Valentine’s concert at The Opera House.

Completed in 1900, the Opera House celebrates it’s 111 years in 2011 and promises to continue showcasing many more great talents.

Book your Lviv apartment now and book early for the Loretti concert.

Vandalism saddens our Lviv apartments staff

Live has museum-quality pharmacies

I have just read a news- breaking story and had to call our staff in Lviv to verify the facts.  We are all very heart broken to hear that bandits have vandalized the historical(1853) “Apteka” or pharmacy at #1 Kopernica St. in downtown Lviv.  Among the valuable treasures was an original gas lamp called – ” under the golden star”.  Lviv was first to introduce to Europe the concept of gas lanterns and so this loss marks a  sad day indeed in the city’s history!

A window was broken and the original interior destroyed in this center where medical students still  held training  sessions.

Rumors and scandals surround this catastrophic act.  It is rumored that the rent there had gone up excessively lately, 30 employees there have recently been dismissed, and entrepreneurs have been wanting to create a restaurant in this location.

We at Lviv apartments are committed to restoration and preservation in our suite and we sincerely hope that these vandals will be caught and brought to justice.

Children encouraged at our Lviv apartments

Cildren are the future of Ukraine

We at Lviv apartments are always thrilled when parents arrive with their children. It excites us to know that creative minds will learn more about this wonderful city that is saturated with history and culture. With their innocence and lack of preconceived prejudices, Children hold the key to the future.

Roughly 1,000 school children and their teachers from Eastern Ukraine descended upon Lviv for Christmas.  They were billeted with families and taken in by certain hotels.  They came here on an East- west program that promotes harmony between these two contrasting areas in Ukraine.  The East has been Russified for centuries and tends to be more synmpathetic to Russia.  The West is much more nationalistic and European in its’ approach and style.  These fundamental historical and political divisions have always divided the country .  How unfortunate!

There appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel when thousands of students from the East come to learn Galician traditions and sing with their fellow Ukrainians.  While here,  they attended many church services, visited the numerous museums that Lviv is famous for  and they even toured the ancient castles just outside of Lviv.

At rentlviv.com we applaud such positive initiatives and hope for many more to come.
