Lviv History

Lviv apartments encourages higher education

The Ivan Franko State University in Lviv

The Ivan Franco State University is one of the most respected educational institutes in Eastern Europe. Founded in 1661, it is the oldest University in Ukraine now celebrating it’s 350th anniversary.

President Victor Yanukovych congratulated it’s rector, faculty and students  for it’s continued success in molding the country’s best intellectuals.

The sad irony in all of this is that many students pay bribes to enter faculties, some pay as much as $15.000 to buy diplomas in law and medicine.  Professors justify this corruption by stating that they are so poorly paid that they need these bribes to survive.

We at Lviv apartments sincerely hope that soon such corruption will come to an end so that Іvan Franko University can truly live up to it’s prestigious reputation.

Peace for 2011 from your Lviv apartments staff

Image of Stalin

Traditionally New Year’s Eve is a time  for good wishes , celebration, and the making of  positive resolutions.    Unfortunately, this was not the case this year in Ukraine!

This year , it was not fireworks and merry- making that dominated the News in Ukraine.  It was more so the  news story about  the bomb blasting of the bust of Stalin in Zaporiznia, Eastern Ukraine.  The Government jumped at the oppotrtunity to blame and suppress its opposition -The Svoboda Party.

Difficult to believe that the communists have just this year erected the bust of a man who created mass starvation in Ukraine , even more difficult to believe that Ukraine’s government allowed such an installation to happen!  This is a prime example of ” slave mentality” where such negative imagery has  been instilled in the people by centuries of imperial dominance.

I suppose life is a continuous search for justice.   Injustice and aggression will always be with us and yet we must struggle towards attaining  peace and harmony especially on the eve of a new year.

The Ukrainian people must now deal with a one of the word’s most corrupt  governments that is undermining it’s  freedom of speech and robbing it’s economy.

We and the staff  at our  Lviv apartments wish the peace loving people of Lviv  ( a people that has forever struggled for their nation) a year of  democracy and honest leadership.

Solomia Kryshelnytska would have felt right at home in our Lviv apartments

The museum -like quality of out Apartments in Lviv

portrait of Solomia Kryshelnytska

Our Lviv apartments are often likened to museums.    We have purposefully restored their Austria-Hungarian features : the oak parquet floors, the solid wooden doors, the ornamentation.  With intent, we have furnished them with antique furniture, Turkish rugs, and vintage artifacts- all this to the provide our clients with the experience of the palatial grandeur that was -Lviv in its heyday!

Entering our suites is a similar experience to visiting the famous museum and former dwelling of the famous Opera Singer Solomia Krushelnytska -1872-1952 .  This great 20th century  opera star ( the Lviv Opera is named after her as is the prestigious boulevard near the university where one finds her museum)  acquired international status as the 1904 savior of Puccini’s ” Madama Butterfly” ( whose premiere in Milan had been booed just a few months prior to her legendary performance).  All of the greatest concert halls of the world wanted to secure contracts with her.

The Soviets eventually confined her to Lviv where she focused on Ukrainian productions and folk songs as the instructor at the Lviv conservatory.

Her former dwelling and now museum is embellished with authentic period furniture and fascinating memorabilia as are our apartments in Lviv.    Please visit us soon- no admission required!

Our Lviv apartments cater to all nationalities

all nationalities are welcome at our Lviv apartments

We have had clients from all nations and all races in our Lviv apartments .  Our friendly and professional staff offer services in Ukrainian, Russian,Polish, English and French.  Our team is very well read about Lviv and it’s history and can easily direct tourists to their specific enquiries and searches.  Case in point:  a recent Jewish client was thrilled to find our staff knowledgeable about the rich Jewish history of Lviv and surrounding villages.

In Lviv:  picture the Janowska concentration camp, imagine  the abandoned Golden Rose Synagogue.  During World War2,  6 ,000 of Lviv’s 200,000 Jews were Killed and anti- semitism persisted during the Soviet regime.

I like to believe that the new generation in Lviv is more socially tolerant than it’s forefathers.  I believe that there is  a recognition of how vital and sophisticated the Jewish  community was prior to Nazi terrorism.

-In 2010, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited the B”nai B’rith centre in Lviv denouncing discrimination.

-Ukraine has removed visa restrictions from Israel starting 2011.

-Alexander Schwarz from Germany ( а Janowska survivor) now funds a relief program for the Elderly at the B’nai B’rith center, providing food and medication for the poor.

These are all steps towards mending  the horrors of the past and making for a tolerant and civilized society. – Bravo Lviv.
