LVIV APARTMENTS FOR RENT Rotating Header Image

Maslyana at you Apartment in Lviv

It is officially Shrove Tuesday and all over the world Christian communities begin their period of fasting or lent prior to the  Easter celebrations-Lviv is no exception! In Latin countries this Tuesday is called “Mardi Gras” .  In Lviv and the Slavic world it is called Maslyana.

Lviv is so deeply steeped in history and is known for its’ fervent commitment to religion.  People come from all over the country and the world to witness the amazing religious ceremonies and rituals that continue to be performed here as they have been for generations.

Many rituals are rooted in Pagan tradition, as is pancake Tuesday. Christian Leopolites are allowed to eat as much butter or “Salo” (lard)  with their pancakes on this day as a last indulgence prior to the great feasting of Lent. Expect delicious buckwheat pancakes in the culinary center that is Lviv.

Since ancient times, pancakes have been a symbol of the sun and rich harvest which is very appropriate as Spring is just around the corner.

We at Lviv apartments always await these celebrations with great anticipation.

Georgian Concerts in Lviv (apartments in Lviv)

The Opetra House repertoireMarch promises to be a busy month for The Opera House in Lviv. At the top of  its’ repertoire are two gala performances by Georgian artists.

March 3rd presents Sukhishvile, the famous Georgian National Ballet.  Lviv is a important stop on its’ tour of 30 Ukrainian cities. The troupe has included the traditional Ukrainian dance-”gopok” for their Lviv performance.

March 11th features Georgian Jazz singer Nina Katamadze showcasing  her new album called “Red”.

Georgia and Lviv have always had close relations as they share a common Soviet Past and common aspirations towards democracy.

In 2009 Georgia opened an honorary Consulate in Lviv.

Lviv apartments share the enthusiasm for these Georgian performances.  Don’t forget we are just steps away from the Opera House.

“SALO” UKRAINES’ NATIONAL DISH! (lviv apartments)

As a consummate traveler, my trips are often highlighted by taste testing local cuisines. Traditional foods are an integral part of the local flare and culture. I firmly believe that one can learn more about a people by sharing a traditional meal than by visiting a museum. My recent travels to Lviv,Ukraine has reaffirmed in me this truism.

Haute cuisine in Paris includes “Pate de foie gras”, terribly controversial! A Dim Sum in Beijin serves up spicy chicken feet, definitely an acquired taste. Lviv tops it all- cured or fermented slabs of pig fat called”salo”is the ultimate of local delicacies!

Picture the courageous Cossack, conquering the great steppes of Ukraine through bitterly cold winters. These carnivorous tribesmen knew that they needed to fill their bellies and keep their bodies warm in order to conquer and survive. What better way to attain these creature comforts than to indulge in the ultimate feast-”salo”!

Of course, the Lviv of 2011 is a very cosmopolitan place with a great array of international restaurants ranging from trendy Sushi bars to traditional Italian Eateries. By far my favorite remains-The International House of Salo – a culinary delight. Are you ready to tickle your taste buds, be prepared to rejuvenate your sense.

At my first attempt at being a local gourmet, I am told that it is all in the presentation. I am assured that once I am hooked, I will soon realize why it is called the Ukrainian narcotic! The trick is to slice the salo very thinly and place it delicately on a fresh piece of sour dough bread. Garlic is the quintessential spice in this part of the world and a full clove is the minimum amount for this canape. To complete the gastronomical extravaganza, 100 grams of the finest ” Horilka” or Vodka is an absolute must! This is a cultural and culinary experience that you will not soon forget. What appears to be trending in the more chi chi establishment is Lviv, is to add a slice of world renowned Lviv chocolate to give the overall experience a touch of the exotic.

However much Leopolites adore their salo, they also have many related anecdotes and openly joke about it. They assure me that salo is not only their national dish, it is also a philosophy and an integral part of the phsyche in Lviv. It is as strong a symbol of nationalism and patriotism as is their flag or their coat of arms.

As a staunch vegan, I must admit that this particular dish will take some courage to digest. Again, my friends in Lviv appease my disdain with a recent discovery about salo. Apparently, it has anti-radiation qualities and has become an essential part of the local diet ever since Chernoby. To convince me, They will have to think of a better reason to justify the consumption of this- their nation dish.

For me, travel is synonymous with curiosity and I have to keep reminding myself that curiosity killed the cat. On a serious note, I suggest that one step out of one’s culinary comfort zone when visiting a new culture. Etiquette dictates that one respect and honor local eating rituals. My advice to the novice is: look at it as serenading your palate with a unique culinary concept. Salo- the mainstay of every Ukrainian meal.

Enjoy Salo in the comfort of the fully equipped kitchen in your very own Lviv apartment

Internation women’s day ( Lviv apartments)

March 8th commemorates  International womens’ day (a Soviet introduced holiday in Ukraine and so more popular in the Eastern part of the country). March 8th falls on a Tuesday and so the Ukrainian government has just declared 4 official days off for the country from Saturday March 5th till Wednesday March 9th.  Cause for celebration!

On this day Lviv also celebrates Lviv Chocolate Day.  On this occasion, 10 of the city’s best pastry chefs will create (with roughly 40 kilos of chocolate) l the “Longest Chocolate Cake” for everyone one to enjoy in the Rynok Square.

As is tradition on this International Womens’ day, men will present flowers to women.  The snowdrop should be just about popping out from under the smow at this time for it is the traditional flower offered to women on this day.

Recently, at the Davos Economic Summit President Yanukovych made a ” faux pas” concerning women. He made a reference to women in Ukraine wearing lighter clothes for spring and this was interpreted by the media as a spring strip tease .

Lviv apartments wishes all of the beautiful women in Lviv a very happy day.

Ukrainian wedding traditions (Lviv rentals)

a wedding in Lviv

I always cry at weddings! I find it so difficult to hold back my feelings at such emotional events. In my opinion, Eastern European weddings are the most emotional, they are a mixture of pomp and pageantry combined with laughter and theatrics.

I am waiting in the Market Square in downtown Lviv, Ukraine. Unfolding before my very eyes is a virtual catwalk of beautiful brides all taking advantages of the photo opportunities in this very romantic setting. The parade is never ending, without exaggeration there are hundreds of girls in full bridal regalia- so young, they are like children really. Statistics show that the average age of Ukrainian brides is 21 and that divorces occur in one out of three marriages- how sad.

I am actually going to a country wedding that promises to be very different from the urban version. I have heard so much about all of the traditions and rituals, many pagan in origin. I can’t wait! I am wearing a navy blue suite for I was told never to wear black. Luckily my roses are white. They sad that bringing red roses to a wedding would a bad omen. Ukrainians can be so superstitious!

We are traveling with the most essential items for a successful ceremony. The “rysnyk”( the traditional towel with doves embroidered onto it) is the common thread of life in this part of the world. A “rysnyk” is embroidered at one’s birth and at ever major life event, especially the wedding. We also delicately carry with us the “Korovai” (braided bread with dough pine cones as fertility symbols) another quintessential life symbol here.

We arrive just in the nick of time as this day is a multi-staged ceremony where timing is everything! First are the comical matchmaking theatrics, followed by parental blessings and an elaborate church ceremony. The culminating event is the all night reception with a myriad of traditional foods. The menu includes all of the local favorites like borscht, cabbage rolls, and perogies (stuffed dumplings). The delicacies are accompanied by vodka which fuels old tunes, sung slightly off key. This couple will “tie the knot” in beautifully embroidered garments, a tradition which is witnessing a revival near patriotic Lviv. The bride’s head dress is a stunning arrangement of flowers, ribbons and coins.

Despite the solemn seriousness of wedlock, much of the evening is filled with comic relief. The best man dresses as the bride for whom a ransom is paid. Dishes are broken for good luck, the couple is to count money and drink honey after the ceremonial evening. The traditions are as numerous as there are villages.

The merry making carries on for days. Guests dress as gypsies and pranksters, stealing chickens on the farm, hiding things in the house, singing naughty songs.

We eventually return to Lviv exhausted by all of this energy and activity. Finally I understand why the locals say that they “play” a wedding as opposed to “celebrate” it. The rituals and prayers, the theatrics and pranks, all combine to make for a very playful and memorable event.

Lviv apartments promote Ukrainian language and culture

Thyer Flag of Ukraine

February 21st marks an important day for Ukraine- it is International day of native languages.   For Lviv this should be a day of pride!  For centuries the Ukrainain language has been persecuted, humiliated and even forced out of use.  Under a program called ” United Russian Language” the Soviets tried to crush the Ukrainian language, culture and art  in their attempts to colonize Ukraine.

The people of Lviv are survivors.  They are very patriotic and nationalistic and would never let their language die!  To this day they protest the Yanukovych regime which wants Russian as an official second language and as a University entrance and testing language.

A 2002 cencus showed that 67.5 o0f Ukrainian citizens claimed Ukraine as their native language-bravo!

The majority of our clients at  Lviv apartments are visitors who are thrilled that we support the Ukrainian language and culture. They are visiting Ukraine to witness it’s unique culture and not a cultured imposed upon it by Russia.

Lviv apartment”s countdown to Euro 2012

There are approximately 500 days left to Euro 2012!  This may seem like a long time but it really isn’t considering the magnitude of such an event.

As Lviv prepares for the Euro 2012, innovative  ways to allure and satisfy tourists are a must.  The most recent venture by city council is to introduce a new technological concept called  “quick read” codes.  These bar codes allow smart phone users to scan the code and read about the location they are at.   These codes will be placed at the most strategic historical sites in the old city center.

Recently new street signs have been introduced in the Latin alphabet to help non cyrillic speaking visitors.

Mr. Platini, the UEFA president is now extremely happy to announce that Ukraine has made tremendous progress towards the games.

We at Lviv apartments congratulate Lviv and are counting down the days to Euro 2012!

Lviv apartments encourages higher education

The Ivan Franko State University in Lviv

The Ivan Franco State University is one of the most respected educational institutes in Eastern Europe. Founded in 1661, it is the oldest University in Ukraine now celebrating it’s 350th anniversary.

President Victor Yanukovych congratulated it’s rector, faculty and students  for it’s continued success in molding the country’s best intellectuals.

The sad irony in all of this is that many students pay bribes to enter faculties, some pay as much as $15.000 to buy diplomas in law and medicine.  Professors justify this corruption by stating that they are so poorly paid that they need these bribes to survive.

We at Lviv apartments sincerely hope that soon such corruption will come to an end so that Іvan Franko University can truly live up to it’s prestigious reputation.

Your apartment in Lviv- a St. Valentine’s treat

St. Valentine's Day in Lviv

Lviv is a very  romantic city with it’s historical architecture, cobble stone streets and horse drawn  carriages.  It is the ideal setting for Valentine’s day! One only need to rent a lviv apartment to complete the amorous scenerio.

Such celebrations as Valentine’s ( including Halloween  and Mother’s day ) were not celebrated here during Soviet times. Leopolites have certainly caught on quickly and now celebrate with flare and panache.

Coinciding with St. Valentine’s day this year  will be Lviv’s third annual “Shokolad”  Festival. This event will feature, the longest chocolate cake for everyone to feast on at Rynok Square, sculpture contests, cooking classes, concerts, games and competitions.

Lviv has always had a very strategic geographic location, bordering many major centers with easy access to Asia.  Among many items, Lviv has traded sugar and so has traditionally had a strong  chocolate culture.  “Svitoch” has been it’s world famous chocolate for generations.  To this day, Lviv is considered second to Bern for it’s chocolate fame.  Downtown Lviv has it’s very own Chocolate factory come restaurant at # 3 Serbska Street.  Here you will find miniature chocolate replicas of City Hall and Lviv’s mascot -the lion.

Complete your romantic fantasy  and book your apartment in Lviv now- February 14th is just around the corner!

Coming in for a landing- then off to your Lviv Apartment

a happy landing in Lviv

It is always so exciting to arrive into Lviv especially now!  With all of the preparations for the Euro 2012 football championship the airport is abuzz with energy.

The metal roof is already installed on the new terminal and all should be ready by the fall of this year -2011.  The new runway will soon be able to accommodated Trans-Atlantic flights and the new state-of-the-art  terminal promises to accept 1,220 passengers per hour.  This expansion is estimated to cost $200m.  This will be a vast improvement and will certainly put Lviv firmly on the Euro-tourism map.  Of course there is no question as to how it will encourage foreign investment here.

I had to laugh when I read that airport staff , police officers and cab drivers were being given a crash course in English for the games.  Hopefully they will also be trained in European standards for service and etiquette.

As all major projects in former Soviet Lviv, this project unfortunately remains shrouded in controversy. Many critics believe that it will not be ready on time and many others criticize the abuse of funds-too many sticky fingers!

Regardless of major events, we at Lviv apartments always want to be prepared for our clients. We always stay on top of maintenance necessities and overall improvements.  Soon we will conducting our annual spring clean up.  Come check it out.
